Laptop Won’t Turn On? Step-by-Step Diagnostic Before You Panic
May 27, 2026If you live in Mold or one of the surrounding villages — Buckley, Sychdyn, Treuddyn, Cilcain, Loggerheads — and your laptop, computer, Mac, or iPhone has broken, you’ve got more options than you might think. Some of them are based right in Mold, some are nearby in Buckley or Flintshire, some are further afield in Chester or Wrexham. This guide gives you an honest breakdown of all the realistic choices, when to use each one, and what to expect.
We’re Compufix, an independent computer and Apple repair company based in Chester. We’ve covered Mold daily for over 15 years, so we know the local repair landscape well — including who’s good at what. This guide isn’t a sales pitch; it’s a genuine “if you’re not sure who to call” reference.
If you read it and decide we’re not the right call for your specific job, that’s fine. The goal is to help you find the right repair, not necessarily our repair.
Your main options for computer repair in Mold
1. FHJ Computer Support (Mold, Bromfield Industrial Estate)
FHJ are the most established Mold-based IT company, going since 2012 and based on Queens Lane, Bromfield Industrial Estate (CH7 1JR). They focus on business IT: networks, servers, Microsoft 365, cyber security, phone systems, websites, and software development.
Best for: Mold businesses needing ongoing IT support, network design, Office 365 migration, or anything involving servers and infrastructure.
Less ideal for: consumer iPhone/MacBook/iPad repair (not their primary focus), late-evening or weekend callouts.
2. Computarite (Buckley)
Computarite is a long-running Windows PC and laptop repair shop in Buckley (CH7 3DX), serving Buckley, Mold, Deeside, and surrounding areas. They’ve been going since 1998 and are well-regarded locally.
Best for: Windows PC and laptop repair, no-call-out-charge same-day service for the immediate Buckley/Mold area.
Less ideal for: Apple Mac or iPhone repair.
3. Compufix (Chester, daily Mold callouts)
That’s us. We cover Mold and the surrounding CH7 area daily from our Chester workshop. We’re particularly strong on Apple repair (MacBook, iMac, iPhone, iPad), iPhone repair, data recovery, and late-evening/weekend callouts. Repairs from £20, 90-day warranty, no-fix-no-fee.
Best for: Apple/iPhone repair, urgent same-day or evening jobs, data recovery, anyone in CH7 needing a free callout to their home or business.
Less ideal for: in-person walk-in if you want to drop the device off without a callout — we’re 12 miles up the road in Chester (though we offer free collection and return).
4. Travelling to Chester
Both Computer Buddies (Hoole) and Cheshire Computer Repairs are based in Chester and cover Mold customers willing to travel. About 25 minutes via the A494 from Mold town centre.
Best for: drop-in service if you’d prefer to deal with the repair in person at a workshop.
5. Travelling to the Apple Store at Liverpool ONE
50 minutes from Mold via the M53. The Apple Store at Liverpool ONE is the nearest official Apple repair location.
Best for: in-warranty Apple devices, AppleCare+ claims.
Less ideal for: older Macs Apple class as “vintage”, urgent repairs (1–2 week typical wait), out-of-warranty work (premium pricing).
6. Currys / PC World repair desk
Currys uses a national repair logistics network — your device is shipped to a regional hub and returned a couple of weeks later.
Best for: Currys/PC World devices under their own warranty.
Less ideal for: anything time-sensitive or anything where you want to know who’s actually working on your device.
How to choose — a practical framework
Use FHJ when:
- You run a business in Mold or Flintshire and need ongoing IT support
- You need server, network, or Microsoft 365 work
- You want a Mold-based company with local presence
Use Computarite when:
- You’re in Buckley or near Buckley
- You need a Windows PC or laptop repair
- You’d rather drop off in person than have a callout
Use Compufix when:
- You have an Apple device (MacBook, iMac, iPhone, iPad)
- You need a callout to your home or business
- You need same-day or evening/weekend service
- You have a data recovery emergency
- You want a free collection from Mold to a workshop (we collect and return)
Use the Apple Store when:
- Your Mac is under Apple warranty or AppleCare+
- You’re willing to drive to Liverpool and wait 1–2 weeks
Use Currys when:
- Your laptop was bought from Currys and is still under their warranty
What a good repair experience should look like
Regardless of who you choose, a few non-negotiables:
- A clear, fixed quote before any work — never agree to “we’ll see as we go” pricing
- No fix, no fee — if they can’t fix it, you shouldn’t pay (other than non-refundable specialist parts you’ve pre-authorised)
- A warranty on the repair — 90 days is the industry norm for parts and labour
- Plain English explanations — if you can’t understand what they’re saying, that’s their problem to solve
- An honest opinion on whether it’s worth fixing — a good engineer will tell you when to replace instead of repair
Common repair scenarios for Mold customers
“My iPhone screen is cracked” → Compufix or a phone-specialist kiosk. Repairs from £50, usually same-day.
“My MacBook won’t turn on” → Compufix (Apple specialist). FHJ and Computarite don’t generally cover Mac repair in depth. Try our step-by-step diagnostic guide first — it solves many “dead Mac” cases without any repair needed.
“My business needs ongoing IT support” → FHJ for full-stack business IT, Compufix for hardware repair + maintenance contracts.
“My laptop is running slowly” → Try our 9-step MacBook guide or the equivalent for Windows. Most slowdowns are SSD-fillness or login items, not hardware faults.
“My hard drive has died and I’ve lost all my photos” → Compufix data recovery — call us as quickly as possible, time matters.
“I need a custom-built gaming PC” → A specialist builder. Honestly, none of the Mold-area shops specialise in this — we’d suggest looking at PC Specialist (online) or a regional builder.
“I dropped my laptop in liquid” → Compufix, today, not tomorrow. Don’t try to turn it on.
A quick word about value
The cheapest quote isn’t always the best deal. A botched repair often costs more in the long run — we see it weekly. A good repair, even at a slightly higher price, gets you:
- Original or premium-quality parts
- A real warranty
- Someone you can call if something goes wrong
- Your device back in 1–3 days rather than 2 weeks
- Your data still intact
If price is genuinely the only consideration, ask each shop the same three questions: (1) what’s your fixed quote, (2) what parts will you use, (3) what warranty applies? Comparing on all three is fairer than comparing on price alone.
