Laptop Won’t Turn On? Step-by-Step Diagnostic Before You Panic

A laptop that won’t turn on is alarming — but it’s rarely as bad as it looks. Most of the time, the problem is the charger, the battery, or a simple electrical glitch that takes 30 seconds to clear. Less often, it’s a genuine motherboard fault. The trick is knowing which.

This guide walks you through the same diagnostic steps a laptop repair engineer would run — in the order they’d run them. Work through it from the top down, and by the end you’ll have one of three answers: (1) it’s fixed, (2) it’s a charger or battery issue you can sort yourself, or (3) it needs professional repair.

The steps below work for Windows laptops (Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, Microsoft Surface, MSI, Razer) and MacBooks. Some Mac-specific steps are flagged where relevant.

Don’t skip steps. The first three resolve most “dead laptop” cases, and skipping ahead misses easy wins.

Step 1 — Is it actually getting power?

The most common cause of “laptop won’t turn on” is “laptop isn’t being charged.”

Check:

  • Is the charger plugged in at both ends? Both at the wall and at the laptop. Sounds silly; we see this weekly.
  • Is the wall socket working? Test it with another device.
  • Is there a power-on light somewhere? Most laptops have an LED on the charging port, the side of the laptop, or the front edge. If it’s on, power is reaching the laptop. If it’s off, the problem is power delivery, not the laptop itself.
  • Are you using the original charger? Generic or third-party chargers often deliver lower wattage than the laptop needs to wake from a fully drained battery — even though the same charger might keep a running laptop running.

Quick test: leave the laptop plugged in for at least 30 minutes without touching it, then try to turn it on. A fully drained battery sometimes needs a long top-up before the laptop will respond.

Step 2 — Power drain reset (the magic fix)

This solves about 40% of “dead laptop” cases we see at our Chester workshop. It clears any residual electrical charge that may be preventing the laptop from booting.

For most Windows laptops:

  1. Unplug the charger
  2. Remove the battery if it’s removable (older Dells, Lenovos, HPs — pop it out from underneath)
  3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds
  4. Put the battery back (if removable)
  5. Plug in the charger
  6. Try to turn on

For laptops with non-removable batteries (most laptops 2015+, all MacBooks):

  1. Unplug the charger
  2. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds
  3. Plug in the charger
  4. Try to turn on

For Microsoft Surface devices:

  1. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds
  2. Then press Volume Up + Power button together for 15 seconds
  3. Wait 10 seconds
  4. Plug in and try to turn on

This step alone fixes a huge number of “dead” laptops. Do it before panicking.

Step 3 — Check the charger

Chargers fail more often than laptops do. A few quick checks:

  • The brick (the box in the middle of the cable) — does it have an LED? If yes, is it on? If no LED at all, the charger has likely failed
  • Wiggle the cable at both ends — frayed cables, particularly at the plug end, are extremely common. If wiggling makes a light flicker, the cable is dying
  • Look at the connector — is the pin in the laptop port bent or damaged? Is the connector loose?
  • Sniff the brick — yes, really. A burnt-electronics smell means the charger is dead
  • Borrow another charger — if you can, test with a known-working charger of the right wattage and connector type. (Don’t use a wrong-wattage USB-C charger on a laptop — modern laptops often refuse to charge from underpowered USB-C sources.)

Charger failures usually look exactly like motherboard failures from outside the laptop. Always rule out the charger first.

Step 4 — Listen and feel

Press the power button and listen carefully:

  • Any sound at all? Fans, hard drive, beeps?
  • Any vibration or warmth? Place your hand near the keyboard area
  • Any LED activity at all? Caps Lock indicator, charging indicator, status lights?
  • Beep codes? Some laptops (particularly Dell and Lenovo) beep in patterns to signal hardware problems. Count the beeps and look up the code online (search: “Dell laptop 3 beeps power on”)

What this tells you:

  • Complete silence + no LEDs + no fans = power delivery problem (charger, battery, or power circuit on the motherboard)
  • Fans spin but no display = the laptop is booting but the display has a problem (see step 5)
  • Beeps with no display = a specific hardware fault — write down the beep pattern
  • Brief flash of activity then dead again = power is briefly reaching the laptop but failing — often a battery or power IC fault

Step 5 — Is it actually the screen, not the laptop?

If the laptop makes booting noises but you see nothing on the screen, the laptop is alive — only the display is dead.

Test:

  1. Press the power button and let the laptop sit for a minute
  2. Shine a torch at an angle on the screen — can you see a very faint image of the Windows or Mac login screen?
  3. If yes → it’s a backlight failure, not a dead laptop. Common on older laptops, usually fixable for £80–£150
  4. Connect an external monitor (HDMI or USB-C) — does the external monitor work?
  5. If yes → it’s a screen or screen cable problem, not a logic board issue

External monitor working but built-in dead is the single most common “dead laptop” misdiagnosis we see. Often the laptop is fine — only the screen needs replacing.

Step 6 — Check for liquid damage

Be honest with yourself. Has anything been spilled on this laptop, even months ago? Has it been near a kitchen sink, a bathroom, a pool, an outdoor pub table?

Liquid damage can sit dormant for weeks before causing failure. Symptoms specific to liquid damage:

  • Some keys stick or are unresponsive
  • Trackpad behaves erratically when working
  • Battery wouldn’t hold charge before it died
  • Visible corrosion on ports (look at USB and headphone jacks with a torch)
  • The laptop was working fine, then suddenly wasn’t

If liquid is involved: do not keep trying to power it on. Each attempt accelerates corrosion. Bring it to us as soon as possible — same-day diagnosis maximises recovery odds.

Step 7 — Recent changes

Has anything changed in the last 24 hours?

  • Windows update installed overnight? Failed updates can cause boot failures. Often fixable from Windows Recovery
  • New RAM or SSD recently fitted? It might not be seated properly
  • Dropped the laptop? Even a small drop can dislodge a connector
  • Was it left in a hot car or very cold room? Thermal shock can cause shutdowns

Step 8 — MacBook-specific checks

If you have a MacBook:

For Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3, M4):

  • Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, release, wait 30 seconds, then press again
  • If still nothing — connect to mains power, wait 5 minutes, try again

For Intel MacBooks:

  • Run SMC reset (see our MacBook slow guide for instructions)
  • If still nothing — try a NVRAM reset

Visual indicator (all MacBooks):

  • Connect the charger and look at the charging cable’s LED (if your charger has one — MagSafe and some USB-C cables)
  • Green = battery full
  • Orange/amber = charging
  • No light = either fully charged or the charging system has failed

When to bring it to us (and what to expect)

You’ve reached the point where it needs professional eyes if:

  • All steps above have failed
  • It’s a liquid damage case (don’t keep trying)
  • You hear beep codes you can’t decode
  • The external monitor test confirms a logic board issue
  • You’re not comfortable opening the laptop yourself
