This guide breaks down what an iPhone screen replacement should actually cost in Chester in 2026, what affects the price, how to spot a bad-quality repair before you pay, and when it’s genuinely better to replace the phone instead of fixing it.

Why iPhone screen prices vary so much
Three things drive the price:
1. The iPhone model. Older models (iPhone X, 11, 12) use LCD or earlier OLED displays which are cheaper. Newer Pro and Pro Max models use ProMotion OLED at 120Hz with more sensors built in — these are genuinely more expensive parts.
2. The screen quality. “iPhone screen” can mean three very different things:
- Genuine Apple OEM — what Apple uses, costs the most
- OEM pulled / refurbished — genuine Apple screens taken from another device, refurbished. Same quality, lower price
- Aftermarket OLED — third-party OLED screens. Often nearly indistinguishable in normal use, much cheaper
- Aftermarket LCD — cheaper LCD replacements on iPhones that originally had OLED. Noticeably lower quality — avoid unless you’re on a tight budget for an older phone
3. Where you go. Apple Store, Apple Authorised Service Provider, independent specialist, mall kiosk, or DIY kit — wildly different price points.

How to spot a bad iPhone screen repair
We see a lot of botched repairs come into our Chester workshop after another shop has had a go. Things to check at the moment a repair is “finished”:
- True Tone — On iPhone 8 and later, True Tone should work. If True Tone has been disabled in Settings → Display & Brightness, the screen wasn’t original and the relevant chip wasn’t transferred. Not a deal-breaker, but ask the shop why.
- Touch responsiveness — Test edges and corners. Bad aftermarket screens often have dead spots at the edges or “ghost touches”.
- Brightness — Set brightness to maximum. A genuine OEM screen will be visibly brighter than a cheap aftermarket one (modern iPhones go up to 2000+ nits).
- Colour accuracy — Open a photo with skin tones. Bad screens often have a slight greenish or pinkish tint.
- Face ID — Check it still works at multiple angles. A poor-quality repair can damage the front sensor array.
- Black backgrounds — Open Settings (which has a dark grey background on modern iPhones). The black should be true black with no backlight bleed, glow at the edges, or yellow tint.
- Apple’s “Unknown Part” warning — From iOS 15 onwards, iPhones display a settings warning if a non-genuine part has been fitted. Not necessarily a problem — but you should know.
If any of these is wrong, raise it before paying. A reputable shop will redo the work; a poor one will tell you it’s normal (it isn’t).
Should you repair, or replace?
A rough financial rule: if the repair cost is less than 40% of the second-hand value of the phone in working condition, repair it. If it’s more, consider replacing.
Worked examples (May 2026):
- iPhone SE 2020 — worth ~£90 used. Screen repair ~£50. Repair, comfortably.
- iPhone 12 — worth ~£180 used. Screen repair ~£90–£120. Repair.
- iPhone 14 Pro — worth ~£500 used. Apple Store £329, Compufix from £180. Repair (anywhere).
- iPhone 11 with battery health 75% and a cracked back — worth ~£100 used. Combined repair ~£140. Consider replacing.
For sentimental or business-critical phones (e.g. it has irreplaceable photos, business contacts, or you don’t have a backup), repair is almost always better even if the maths is borderline — you don’t risk data migration.
A note on insurance and AppleCare+
If you have AppleCare+ or phone insurance, screen damage is usually covered for a small excess (typically £29 for AppleCare+ in the UK). Always check whether your insurance covers third-party repair — using a non-approved repair can sometimes void the warranty on the rest of the phone. If you have AppleCare+, the cheapest route is almost always to use it.
